Local Boys Betting on Vegas Housing Market and Rocking On

The principals of Southwest Stone are a native, and a long time resident of Las Vegas. They will be opening a new facility and with the increase in space, and their faith that valley builders will “rock with us”, plan to triple production.
On December 1, 2006, Southwest Stone fired up its massive machines in a new location. Founders Ted Michalosky and Johnny Sportsman are certain this bet has excellent odds. After all, they have been gambling on Las Vegas for almost 40 years: Johnny’s family has been here since his grandfather helped erect Hoover Dam, and Ted has been a subcontractor here since the 1970’s “preboom” era.
This desert duo teamed up over 20 years ago to produce some of the most attractive granite countertops for the Valleys biggest and best builders. “If I had to describe my dream subcontractor, Southwest Stone would be it,” boast a purchasing agent from a major builders in the Southwest United States. Even with that kind of praise, they remain modest. The expression “lead by example” really holds true when the V.P. is found tuning up the saw or going over the schedule long after the day shift has gone home.
At one point, these boys did business with not much more than a truck and a cell phone. They never abandoned their hometown and judging by their success, this town has not let them down either. “There have been lean times but we always felt there was no better place to be in business,” says Ted Michalosky. With a declaration like that, its no wonder they are making such a considerable investment. The newly constructed 2 million dollar, 16000 sq ft building stands in NE Las Vegas on Lincoln Street near Cheyenne and Lamb.
They plan on taking advantage of every inch of additional space. “We will finally have the space to get the biggest and best machines available, and we will, but there is no substitute for the human eye and good, old fashioned craftsmanship,“ declares one of the founders, who consider each of the over 70 employees to be part of the Southwest Stone family. “We feel good about creating jobs in Las Vegas and are looking forward to increasing our staff as we increase our production.” said Johnny Sportsman.
With builders offering incentives to home buyers and sales starting to climb again, Southwest Stone will provide some new and unique features such as fabrication only services, hands on installation training and shipping to outlying areas. The plan is to make other markets self sufficient and this gorgeous product more affordable.
